The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has called on people to stand against violence in the wake of of chaos and looting that has hit the country following the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma.
Reports indicates that after the jailing of Jacob Zuma shops have been looted looted and buildings set on fire. At least six people have been killed and nearly 500 people have been arrested.
Troops have reportedly been dispatched in Gauteng province, and in the former President’s home province o KwaZulu-Natal.
The former President, was sentenced to jail after he failed to attend a corruption inquiry to give evidence at an inquiry into corruption during his 9 years in power. Zuma had only testified once at the inquiry into what is known as ”state capture”.
He earlier refused to hand himself over to the police but on Wednesday his foundation disclosed that he has agreed to hand himself over.
79-year-old Zuma was given a 15-month prison sentence and hoping to get the sentence rescind or reduced by the country’s constitution.
Addressing the nation on Monday, Mr. Ramaphosa condemned the acts of public violence which he says its rarely seen in the history of South Africa’s democracy.
