E-Levy Will Be Double Taxation-Kwabena Duffour Opines

The former Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr. Kwabena Duffour has added his voice to the number of Ghanaians who are calling on government to cancel the newly introduced Electronic Transaction levy noting that it will increase the tax burden on Ghanaians.

According to him because mobile money transaction is widely used in the country the e-levy will affect the Ghanaian populace directly.

He went on to say that the e-levy simply means double taxation because already the ordinary Ghanaian is taxed on his income.

“This makes the proposed E-levy problematic because it could be fraught with serious implementation challenges. This tax could undermine the Ghanaian Digital Economy.

“It should be noted that taxes/levies are imposed on income, gifts, consumption and held properties or assets. Electronic transfers and payments are none of these,” he said.

The former Finance Minister made the statement while delivering a lecture held by Institute for Fiscal Studies dubbed: The Ghanaian Dream; Transforming the Economy through Job Creation and Opportunities for all’.

The event was held at Tang Palace Hotel in Accra on 29th November 2021.
