The outbreak of bird flu which hit some neigbour countries of Ghana have been confirmed by the Ashanti regional directorate of the veterinary service of hitting Atwima Kwawoma District.
According to the directorate of the Ashanti region, four thousand birds were killed by the disease while thousands of eggs were destroyed too as at 29th July 2021.
After Ghana detected that the outbreak of bird flu has hit some neighbouring countries, the disease killed over 10,000 poultry birds in the country.
In total, the bird flu has killed 5,811 poultry birds naturally and the veterinary service have also killed some 4,500 birds.
Meanwhile, Ghana has banned poultry importation from neighbouring countries that have detected cases of bird flu. This comes after Ghana also detected the out break of bird flu in 3 regions including Greater Accra Region, Central Region and Volta Region.
In a statement the Ministry disclosed that it has banned the importation of poultry birds as part of measures to curb the spread of the disease.
“The Ministry of Food and Agriculture through its Veterinary Services Directorate, has confirmed the outbreak of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza disease, otherwise known as Bird Flu in some parts of the country. These are the Greater Accra, Central and Volta Regions. The outbreak of the disease follows the detection of similar cases in neighbouring countries since January, 2021. Through effective surveillance and disease control management the Veterinary Services Directorate has prevented the extension of the disease into Ghana until now,” the statement read.
