Assin North MP who contested election on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress in the 2020 election, James Gyakye Quayson has had his mandate being nullified by a Cape Coast High Court.
On Wednesday 28th July 2021, the court directed for a fresh election to be held in the constituency for a new member of Parliament to be elected for the area.
This comes after the petitioner, Michael Ankomah Nimfah raised concerns of Mr. Gyakye Quayson holding dual citizenship as a Ghanaian and a Canadian at the time he was elected as MP and must be restrained from performing his duties.
Prior to the court’s ruling the NDC’s Sammy Gyamfi accused the Cape Coast High Court’s registrar of working with with NPP to manipulate the court’s ruling against their MP.
Sammy Gyamfi points that the registrar Ustaz Hamza before the courts ruling refused to appear in court or open the registry of the court to allow Hon. James Gyakye Quayson’s lawyers to file the motion for the trial judge to refer the case to the Supreme Court.
“The NDC can see a deliberate and evil conspiracy between the Court’s registry and the NPP to manipulate the court processes and decision in their favor, all in an effort to steal the Assin North seat from the NDC. And this begs the question as whether or not the trial judge is privy or party to this shameful conduct of the Court’s registry”, he stated.
