The former President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma has handed himself over to the police to start serving a 15-month jail sentence for contempt of court.
This comes after the police threatened to arrest Zuma if he fails to hand himself over to the police by midnight.
On Wednesday the former President was admitted to Estcourt Correctional Center in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal.
The former President, was sentenced to jail after he failed to attend a corruption inquiry to give evidence at an inquiry into corruption during his 9 years in power. Zuma had only testified once at the inquiry into what is known as ”state capture”.
He earlier refused hand himself over to the police but on Wednesday his foundation disclosed that he has agreed to hand himself over.
In a tweet his daughter Dudu Zuma-Sambudla wrote; ”en route to the jail and he is still in high spirits”.
