James Gyakye Quayson, the member of parliament for Assin North, said he is not afraid of being sent to jail if proven guilty of the allegations made against him. Hon. Quayson declared that he trusts the legal system and that the allegations against him will be dropped.
In an interview with Citi TV’s Umaru Sanda, he questioned him on his fears of landing in Nsawam prison if found guilty. Hon. Quayeson remarked, “No, why should I? I have faith in the legal system. Any legal case must prove that the defendant intended to commit the offence at issue. Did he plan it? I haven’t made any such plans.
“My strongest conviction is that this is just a matter of time; when you believe you have done the right thing, you shouldn’t be afraid. I trust the court will deliver a very positive verdict; I trust my lawyers; I trust the conscience of the people”.
He said that since 2009, he has been making use of his dual citizenship.
The Ministry of Interior is where you obtain dual citizenship; you provide both your Canadian and Ghanaian passports, and they issue you a green certificate, which serves as proof of your dual citizenship. I travelled without a visa from Ghana to Canada from 2009 until I became a Ghanaian citizen entirely.
“How can the same individual be applying for or renewing his passport, and you claim I don’t have any other nationality? The Ghanaian authorities recognised me as a dual citizen. It is not logical. Unless they further fail to review their own records, So I have zero fear of going to jail,” he uttered.
Due to allegations of falsification and deceit, the MP is presently in court.
