The Speaker of Ghana’s 8th Parliament, Alban Kingsford Bagbin has said that he can remove President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo from office.
According to him the law of Ghana gives Parliament power to remove the President from office but doesn’t give the President same power to remove a Speaker of Parliament from office.
Alban Bagbin speaking at the post-budget forum held in Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana was more concerned about the fact that Parliament always approves budgets that benefits the executive and not the Judiciary and Legislature.
This is something the speaker says must be corrected because it’s not a deficiency in the constitution but a deficiency in Parliament.
“This year, all the laws we have been passing are laws we passed to benefit the executive, even we forget about Parliament in the language we use, this is self-inflicted; it is not a deficiency in the constitution, it’s a deficiency in Parliament itself. We must correct it”, he stated.
He advised Parliament to use the power they wield in the law and should stand for themselves and not play by the whims of the executive. Citing an example he said Parliament has the power to remove President from office.
