Many students in Congo stormed the nation’s Parliament calling on law makers to give teachers high salaries.
The angry students were heard chanting “we want to study” and “if we don’t study, we will take drugs” amidst waving branches.
According to the UN-owned Radio Okapi, a similar demonstration was witnessed at the town hall of the eastern town of Beni in North Kivu region.
This comes after teachers went on strike since October 4 demanding an increase in salary and a lower retirement age among many others.
Leaders of religious groups who administer most primary schools have been accused by the government of the day for influencing the strike action but they have denied it.
The first vice-president of Congo ‘s national assembly, Jean Marc Kabunda who addressed the students urged them to go home since it was not their fight.
“You do not belong in the street, you belong at school and if you are not at school, you should be at home,” he told the students.
