Galamsey Fight: Government To Challenge $15m Judgement Debt-Dame

Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame has announced that he will challenge a $15m judgement debt awarded against Ghana’s government in the fight against illegal mining.

According to Mr. Dame on Citi Tv’s Point of View Program he will still challenge the judgement debt on ‘procedural grounds’ even though the time allotted for appealing the judgement debt has expired.

He made this comment following the public’s criticisms on how government is handling the fight against illegal mining by burning excavators.

“Apparently, there has been some judgement debt granted against the Government of Ghana in that regard. I got to know through Randy Abbey that it had been awarded last year. The following Monday, I sought to investigate, and I found out that indeed, there had been a judgement debt of over $15 million granted, and that was in June last year, with respect to some activities by the Inter-Ministerial Committee, and at that time there was no burning at all.”

“So really, the judgement debt becomes unavoidable. But even with respect to that judgement debt, even though the time for appeal has elapsed, I really intend to challenge it on procedural grounds.”

He added that government is using the burning of excavators as its new strategy to halt the operation because no person has the right to engage in illegal mining.
