Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the recent spate of killings targeting mobile money (MoMo) vendors in the Ashanti Region. The arrests follow a series of coordinated investigations by the Ghana Police Service, which intensified efforts to track down the perpetrators behind these violent crimes.
According to Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, one suspect was apprehended in Bawku and two more in Accra. The killings, which have sent shockwaves through communities in the region, have raised concerns about the safety of mobile money operators and the growing insecurity surrounding their operations. Several MoMo vendors have reportedly been attacked in recent weeks, with some losing their lives as assailants make off with their cash and valuables.
According to police sources, investigations are ongoing, and further arrests may occur as they attempt to destroy the criminal network. Law enforcement organizations are also asking mobile money sellers to remain watchful and use stronger security measures when processing transactions.
Meanwhile, residents and entrepreneurs in the impacted districts have urged the government to enact tighter security measures to combat the increased incidence of violent crime. Community leaders have also lobbied for enhanced police patrols and the deployment of security workers in high-risk locations.
