Ghana has confirmed cases of the Omicron Variant of the Covid-19 on 2st November 2021 according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
The Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye made this confirmation on Wednesday 1st December 2021 in Accra while addressing the press.
“There is the emergence of the new variant and I must say, through the robust testing at the Kotoka International Airport, Ghana has detected the Omicron variant already and the cases have come mainly from Nigeria and South Africa. The very first case that was detected during our sequencing was on the 21 of November”, Dr. Kumah Aboagye told the press.
According to the GHS, the new variant hasn’t yet been detected in communities. Regardless, Dr. Kumah Aboagye noted that a community spread is likely to happen.
“if someone has omicron and it’s incubating it will not be detected at the airport”, he added.
