Seven Senior High School students are heavily pregnant and 35 have given birth in the Suhum Municipality in the Eastern Region of Ghana.
This incident happened within a space of one year which is from March 2020 to April 2021 but was recorded in 3 Senior High schools.
Islamic Girls Senior High School recorded 15 deliveries and 4 pregnancies. Suhum Technical Senior High Schools (SUTESCO) also recorded 8 deliveries while Suhum Presbyterian Senior High School (PRESEC) recorded two deliveries and 2 pregnancies.
This record came to bare when the Suhum Municipal director of Education, Esther Quaye revealed during an inauguration of the ‘Municipal Advocacy Platform for Back to School Campaign Task Force’ which was held to make sure dropouts students go back to the classroom.
During the period of March 2020 to April 2021, the Municipal Education Director stated that five students between the ages of 12 to 20 years who were at basic levels were impregnated.
This included 12 and 13-year-old class 4 students and class 6 students and the remaining were Junior High Students.
The coronavirus pandemic which brought the imposition of lockdown has been blamed to be the cause of the menace aside from the double track system.
