Illegal Contractors Threat To Green Ghana Programme-Navorongo Forestry Manager

The Navorongo Forestry Division Manager, Emmanuel Owusu has labeled illegal logging contractor’s activities as a threat to the Green Ghana Programme.

An initiative by Government that was recently launched to replace forest that have been depleted with 5 million trees.

On Friday at Navorongo, the capital of Kassena-Nankana Municipality the Forestry Manager mentioned that the prrogramme is going to be threatened by the activities of illegal logging contractors while his outfit was started the programme.

He disclosed that many people want to fence their house as well as roof it and for that reason people will definitely cut trees illegally.

“Everybody needs wood to fence or roof their buildings. So, people want to cut trees illegally. Here, you cannot cut a tree without special permit. My men are on the ground, preventing them from doing that (from felling mature trees). We have got trees of commercial value here.

He stressed that some people also cut the trees for commercial purposes but he assure journalists that his men are on the grounds guarding the trees and so if anyone gets caught he or she will be prosecuted.

He mentioned that 50,000 trees, comprising more than 7,000 species, are set to be planted in four political districts under the Navrongo Forest Services Division— the Builsa South District, the Builsa North Municipality, the Kassena-Nankana Municipality and the Kassena-Nankana West District.
